Limpia is the Spanish word for clean or cleanse. This widespread practice of energy medicine is present in many Latin American cultures. These different traditions use limpias to cleanse the energetic body of old and stagnant energies, foreign entities, and illness.
Some limpia traditions come directly from purely indigenous practices, and some come out of mestizo traditions.
Regardless of the cultural tradition, all limpias are about healing the body, mind, and spirit through the clearing and aligning of the energetic body.
Limpias are performed using a combination of fresh plants, flowers, sacred smoke, music, prayers, and intention.
With this practice of the ritual bath, we are creating a space of restoration, to bring the mind, body and spirit into harmony and balance.
Spiritual bathing and the ritual bath are meant to cleanse and protect us spiritually as well as within the other subtle and more physical levels. To create the desired effects, there are a few things to consider.
When taking a spiritual, ritual bath, you don’t use soaps, shampoos, or do any leg shaving and such. Once the bath is prepared, you are entering a sacred healing experience and space so you’ll want to really think about separating your regular bathing with your spiritual bathing.
- Plan your spiritual bath with a few considerations. Bathing on full moon days is a great way to use spiritual bathing as an intention setting ritual. You can practice a moon bathing ritual once or twice per moon cycle. In this case, you may want to use your new moon spiritual bath as a time to set new intentions. Soak in the bath while you think about what you’d like to call in over the next 29 days. Then, come full moon, use the spiritual bath space to contemplate the intentions you set during the new moon.
- Take a shower before taking any spiritual, ritual bath and wash yourself thoroughly. Clean the bathtub too before filling the tub with water. We do this to open ourselves, body, space to clearing and cleansing. If you have any incense such as palo santo or copal it is good practice to smudge your space beforehand.
- Fill the bathtub with warm water. Light candles, play some meditative healing music, and add the herbal bath sachet.
- Add a cup of salt to the bath and stir the water around to dissolve the salt. You can use fine ground sea salt, pink himalayan salt, or epsom salt. Salt has powerful cleansing properties and hence is a must in any spiritual bath
- Eliminate distractions. Choose a time you can be alone with no distractions and set up a safe sacred space of relaxation and reflection.
- Pray, meditate, journey, or speak on your intention for the release of any energy that you no longer wish to carry or welcome in all that you are attracting. This is our time to be deeply honest and clear in our dialogue with ourselves and with the universe and to trust we are heard.
- Stay in the bath for 15-20 minutes, try to remain aware of your thoughts and prayers during this time. Surrender any negative feelings as they arise and return to a state of harmony and balance.
- For the best results, air dry when you get out of the bath. You may use a towel for your head and put a robe on, but traditionally one does not towel dry. You decide depending on the ambient temp of your bathroom.
- Massage your body with a good herbal oil, or sacred anointing oil you love. Consider working with sacred sound by using your drum or rattle around your body to complete this deep work.
- If possible, don’t take another shower or bath for 24 hours.
Each packet contains 2 bath sachets.
